What is wood?

The primary substance of the tree is referred to as ‘wood’. Trees are formed from the xylem vessels that carry water to plants. Cellulose and lignin are the two main substances of trees.

Types of Wood:

Basically, wood is classified into 3 main types. They are as follows.

  • Flexible:  Mainly used for the details carving of furniture or wood works.
  • Hardwood: Mainly used for doing heavy-duty wooden flooring.
  • Softwood: Mainly used for the construction of wooden roofing and flooring system.

Major Different between Hardwood and Softwood:

The factors like growth, density/durability, application, species, sustainability, appearance, maintenance, and cost determine under which category wood the tree comes from.

  • Growth: Slow-growing trees usually have hardwood whereas softwood trees are evergreen trees.
  • Density / Durability: Hardwoods are dense so they have long durability whereas softwood is less in density and doesn’t have such long durability.
  • Sustainability: As hardwood trees grow slowly they are not renewable whereas softwood trees are fast-growing trees they are considered renewable sources.
  • Maintenance: As hardwoods are long-lasting they are easy to clean whereas less durable softwood needs regular maintenance. 
  • Cost: As hardwoods are slow-growing trees they are high in cost when compared to hardwood, softwood is less expensive.

Used of Wood :

  • Wood is mainly used for making furniture like chairs, tables, cupboards, doors, windows, and much more.
  • Nowadays wood is used for flooring purposes, and features walls, and ceilings by interior designers for decor purposes.
  • Trees like eucalyptus and neem have medicinal properties and are used for the same.
  • Musical instruments are also made using trees only. The trees used for it are more special and unique trees like redwood and sandals wood.

What is a log?

Cut or split wood is referred to as a log or wooden log. Logs are produced directly by agricultural or forestry companies. While making wooden logs, have an optimization step so that nothing goes waste. Log woods are mainly used for commercial purposes as firewood.

Steps in wood log production:

  • The exterior bark of the tree is stripped off completely. The stripped-off bark is collected and sold as a byproduct.
  • In recent times stripped wood is turned into logs using the 3D application, but in the early years, stripped wood is sent to a mill for the cutting process. Usually, the cut wood is categorized into lumber, wood chips, and sawdust.
  • For long-term use, the wood is dried to remove the extra moisture.
  • Once the cut wood is dried they are sorted and stored for sale.
