The wood used for making furniture and building houses or the trees grown for these purposes is referred to as Timber. Wood that is processed into beams and planks is also referred to as timber. In countries like the US and Canada, timber is known by the name of lumber.
“Good Timber Does Not Grow With Ease; The Stronger The Wind, The Stronger The Trees” – J Willard Marriott.
Timber Properties:
- The timber is rugged and durable.
- Timber has the properties of holding the same shape during the seasoning or conversion process.
- Good quality timber is uniform throughout in color, with no defects like shakes, knots, cracks, and flaws.
- Timber serves as a good insulator for the cold and has the capability to take loads suddenly or slowly.
Categories of Timber Woods:
The three main categories of timber woods are as follows.
- Softwood: The trees with needles instead of leaves give the softwoods and they grow fast making them cheaper in price as well as easy to work with.
- Hardwood: They come from trees that have broad-leaf. They grow very slowly, which makes them more expensive, and it’s hard in nature.
- Manufactured Boards: They are produced by gluing up layers of wood together and they are mainly used for industrial purposes.
Converting and seasoning wood into Timber:
Usually, the conversion of timber is carried out at the yard using appropriate machinery at various stages.
Seasoning is the process of removing the water from the tree by drying the wood before it’s going for any of the engineering processes.
Processed wood has to be preserved for various reasons such as increasing timber life and durability structure. The foremost reason for the timber preservation process is to protect it from fungi, insects, etc that can destroy the timber.
Timber Used as Building Materials:
- Timber is an eco-friendly material that does not change into a toxic product in time, causing damage to the environment.
- As timber has excellent strength, it’s used in making beams, piles, columns, and trusses which are load-bearing members.
- Timber is a naturally available material and its economically feasible. More rough timber is used in temporary works, for example, the centering of arches and scaffolding.
- Timber can be converted into any shape and size by just cutting it, hence it is used to make the shutters and frames for doors, roofing materials, windows, furniture, etc.
- Timber has a very good weight ratio capable of transferring both compression and tension force so it is used in the construction of flexural members.
- Timber is used in the construction of temporary structures like bridges and boats.
- As timber is light in weight it makes the handling, transportation, and construction process easy.
